This game subverts our expectations twice. First when Joel brutally dies in the beginning because it caught us off guard, it was very early, and it was very brutal. But even with this we knew where the game was going. It became a revenge game, we were ready to take control of Ellie and go on a killing spree ending with us hopefully murdering Abby. There's even a whole subreddit of people who appearently don't have anything more worthwhile in their lives than to still post daily hate threads about it, 1 1/2 years after release.
